Beyond Impunity

Beyond Impunity is a documentary film that shows the experience of the Liberian theater company Flomo, which performed in 20 communities, in 5 regions, and traveled more than 1000 km in that country.

The film shows the resistance of Liberian society and its urgent quest for justice.

The film portrays how the communities affected by the war express their need for justice and their claim against impunity. The documentary also includes unpublished testimonies of victims, community leaders, interviews with the cast of Flomo, and footage from Liberia.

This film is based on the "Justice in Action" project, an initiative rooted in the participatory theater tradition of Brazilian theatricalist Augusto Boal. The project began in 2017 with a partnership between Civitas Maxima and Flomo Theatre Inc.. In 2019, Flomo embarked on a tour of rural Liberia to share the news of the trial of Mohammed Jabbateh, aka 'Jungle' Jabbah - a former commander of the rebel faction of the United Liberation Movement of Liberia for Democracy (ULIMO) who was convicted in the United States of immigration fraud related to his non-disclosure to U.S. authorities of his involvement in Liberia's First Civil War. "Beyond Impunity" is the audiovisual record of that experience. To this day, those who committed atrocities during the Civil Wars have not been held accountable in Liberia.
